3 Simple Science Experiments for Kids - 3: Flying Tea Bag

This is Part 3 of a three-part series. Parts 1 and 2 can be found here and here.

Science doesn’t have to be complicated! While some experiments might need expensive lab equipment and dangerous chemicals, there are many cool projects you can do with things at home. Try out these 3 simple and easy experiments that you can do at home. Make sure to always have a parent present to help you with your experiments to ensure nobody gets hurt!

Flying Tea Bag

Make a tea bag fly with heat! The flying tea bag experiment is a similar concept to a hot air balloon, but you can do it right at home. This project is simple to do, but impressive to all ages!

Materials:

  • Tea bags

  • Matches

  • Non-flammable plate

  • Markers

Instructions:

  1. Prepare your tea bag: remove the string, staple, and tea from the bag

  2. Unfold your bag so that it is a cylinder. You can trim off the ends so it stands flat. Stand your tea bag on a non-flammable plate.

  3. Once you are ready, light the top of the teabag.

What happened?

When the tea bag was lit, the flames started to heat the air within the tea bag. The heated air rose above the cooler dense air. This is similar to the function of a hot air balloon! Once the tea bag is burned, all that’s left is the lightweight ashes of the tea bag. The lightness of ashes combined with the heated air caused the tea bag to lift into the air.
